Job Description

Position Summary

The Registered Professional Nurse (School) provides professional nursing services to students and school personnel. The position is responsible for delivering first aid and emergency care, conducting and assisting with health screenings, maintaining student health records, supporting immunization and communicable-disease control activities, and promoting a safe and sanitary school environment.

The Registered Professional Nurse (School) performs duties under the general direction of the School Physician or School Nurse-Teacher. Unlike the certified School Nurse-Teacher position, this role does not include classroom instruction or student guidance responsibilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides nursing care, first aid, and emergency treatment to students and school employees.
  • Assists the School Physician with physical, visual, and auditory health screenings and examinations.
  • Identifies and reports health concerns and assists with appropriate follow-up and notification.
  • Maintains accurate and confidential student health records, documentation, and required reports.
  • Assists with school immunization clinics and related health services.
  • Coordinates emergency transportation of ill or injured students or employees to a hospital, home, physician, or dentist when necessary.
  • Consults with school staff regarding health conditions affecting attendance, student well-being, and communicable diseases.
  • Assists with communicable-disease prevention, monitoring, and control procedures.
  • Inspects school facilities, playgrounds, and cafeteria areas for general safety and sanitary conditions and reports concerns to appropriate personnel.
  • Orders, inventories, stores, and monitors first-aid supplies, nursing equipment, and other health-related materials.
  • Provides health-related information and assistance to students, parents, teachers, administrators, and other school personnel as appropriate.
  • Follows established medical and nursing procedures and carries out measures prescribed by authorized medical personnel.
  • May supervise clerical, sub-professional, or non-technical personnel assisting with health-related activities.
  • Performs other related nursing duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of professional nursing principles, practices, and techniques.
  • Working knowledge of medication-related practices, dietetics, sanitation, and personal hygiene.
  • Skill in providing nursing care, first aid, emergency treatment, and health screenings.
  • Ability to recognize health concerns and respond appropriately to emergency situations.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written medical and technical instructions.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and prepare clear reports.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with students, parents, teachers, administrators, medical professionals, and other staff.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, initiative, and discretion in a school environment.
  • Strong observation skills and attention to detail.
  • Patience, emotional stability, dependability, professionalism, and a compassionate attitude toward individuals requiring care.
  • Ability to organize health services and supervise assigned support personnel.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from a school of nursing approved by the New York State Education Department from a program qualifying the individual for registration as a Registered Professional Nurse.

Special Requirement

Eligibility for licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State, with possession of the required New York State RN license at the time of appointment.
